Siri vs. Abortion vs. Grammar
OK, there is a widespread narrative that Siri, the Apple agent that locates the nearest KFC for you, is against abortion. It’s widespread enough that Fox News has had to weigh in, delicately, to say that Siri is not, actually, anti-abortion. This position must have involved a whole board meeting about whether it was better to depict Apple as an elitist liberal corporation, or better to depict the liberal-media-conspiracy as libeling Apple. Anyway, Clayton Morris puts it best, for Fox:
“This inspired me to ask Siri to find me a local kilt store too. She couldn’t do it. I hardly think it was because she has an agenda to prevent me from wearing kilts. (Although she’s would be right if she did.)”
Let’s just focus on that last bit. Although she’s would be right if she did. It’s not really English, but that’s OK. I can deal with non-standard English. My issue here is that I can’t really understand what Morris is trying to say, with or without the clitic. Is he saying that is OK for Siri to have an anti-kilt policy, and thereby an anti-abortion policy as well? Maybe? I mean, I honestly can’t tell.
